Did you know?

How many persons lead to amputations due to Diabetic Foot Ulcers?
80% amputations are due to improperly treated previous ulcerations.

It is a chronic non healing wound (Diabetic Foot Ulcers) in sole of foot which is due to increased pressure in foot at some areas while walking

Any wound by dressings or antibiotics usually heals or shows signs of healing within 1-2 months time, if wound does not show signs of healing by above things either it is callous ulcer or wound has infected the bone

Either due to negligence of patients or unawareness of how to heal callous ulcer by some doctors many patients end up in infections and later amputations.

Callous ulcer looks like a normal wound without any infection so many practitioners prescribe antibiotics/costly ointments/normal MCP or MCR footwear’s, but this wound never heals with routine treatment because it is due to increased pressure while walking, until methods are adopted to reduce pressure while walking this type of wound will never heal but could later lead to bone infection or wet gangrene and foot amputations

Some doctors advice total contact casting which heals wound temporally while they are on cast but once they start walking again wound will come back

It could be treated by individualized custom made footwear according to patients wound location, if it recurs in spite of footwear’s there are podiatric surgeries to reduce pressure to prevent recurrence of ulcer or wound,
If any wound not healing with routine treatment of yours practitioners all you have to do is consult a diabetic foot specialist or a podiatric surgeon

Many patients feel it is normal they don’t realize it could get infected in future ,so once they have seen some doctors and if told it will not heal they live with ulcer rather than searching for specialist. Another common factor is non compliance of patients for using customized footwear and following doctor’s advice

So which stage would you like to get treated?

Podiatry intervention is to block various stages from progressing. Routine treatment of these cases can lead to mismanagement ending in amputation.

Callus leads to tropic ulcer (11 fold risk)/bone infections(abnormal swelling toes)/wet gangrene finally ends in amputations

Diabetic foot ulcer-Trophic ulcer(non healing wound > 2 months) can progress to diabetic foot infections(15-20% times) /bone infections/wet gangrene finally ends up in amputations

Most of these foot problems are preventable through proper foot care and regular visits to your podiatrist detecting diabetic foot neuropathy and taking precautions avoiding amputations
